The tourist season of 2009 may turn out to be the worst in years, Dnevnik daily reports, quoting information that the bookings in advance for summer vacations are 50% less than in 2008. The major seaside resorts report 50% less bookings for the summer by foreign tourists, but the same goes for smaller resorts as well. According to bnn, due to the now cheaper British Pound, tourists from the UK will be driven away from countries in the Eurozone or ones whose currencies are pegged to the Euro. This most likely means Bulgaria and Greece, as the Brits are going to visit Turkey or Egypt instead. Meanwhile in Bulgaria companies from the tourism sector are trying to compensate the withdraw of foreign tourists by attracting more Bulgarians. There are several promotional packages that they offer exclusively to locals.
