TSAREVO - a town situated on a small peninsula,
70 km south-east of Bourgas; a seaside resort. Population of 6000. Ancient
Greek colony and a fishing settlement. In 1880 a big fire burns down the
village, which springs to life anew in a place close by, populated primarily
by refugees from Eastern Thrace in 1913.
TSAREVO
Known as Michurin before the name-change mania of the early 1990's, many
residents and visitors still refer to it by the old name. When the town
was settled at the end of the 15th century by refugees from other Bulgarian
villages, it was known as Vassiliko. Whatever moniker is assigned to the
town, it's a pleasant, friendly place, especially after the twin nightmares
of Primorsko and Kiten. Not a resort town per se, Tsarevo does have some
tourist appeal and its clean, well-maintained appearance is obviously an
attempt to attract tourist business.
Although the town lacks a beach, there is a small waterfront and harbor
on Atliman (Steed) bay. Legend has it that, where Bourgas is situated today,
there was a Bulgarian fortress which the Turks conquered. Among those captured
was a beautiful girl with whom the Sultan fell in love. She agreed to be
his wife if he would leave free the amount of land she could cover in one
day on horseback. Horse and rider managed to make it from Bourgas to Atliman,
where the exhausted animal fell dead; hence, the bay got its name.
The area was under Turkish control until the Balkan War of 1912; after liberation,
it remained poor and undeveloped. Malaria was such a problem that the authorities
seriously considered relocating the population and destroying the village.
Today, fishing, agriculture, timber, and ship building provide the main
sources of income. The southerly location and mild climate enable citrus
fruits to be grown here. The town has a centrally-located hotel, the Chaika
(on the main square near the bus station, tel 3386). Private rooms may be
secured through the Diskos Melani tourist service (#18 Geradjikov, opposite
the seaside park). A good spot from which to observe the admittedly limited
goings-on is at one of the sidewalk cafes on the pedestrian promenade (near
the hotel). The Yalta restaurant (#18 Kraimorie opposite the seaside park),
while a bit down-trodden, is a favored local hangout; another is the Pasat
floating bar in the harbor. The Holy Trinity revival-style church overlooking
the sea houses a small history museum.
From Tsarevo, the main highway heads southwest toward Malko Turnovo and
the Turkish border. The road winds through the hilly Strandzha and the driving
is scenic but slow-going. Aside from the scenery, there's not much of interest
prior to reaching the border. The villages of Kodolovo and Bulgari, once
famous for their routine practice of the ancient art of nesti-narstvo (fire
dancing) - especially on the festive day honoring saints Konstantin and
Elena (May 21) - apparently have relinquished this custom to the coastal
resorts which perform it as a tourist attraction. Fire dancing is thought
to have played a part in Dionysian rites as practiced by the ancient Thracians.
The village of Gradishte has Thracian dolmens in the vicinity.

| There is another reason I like ex-Micurin, Artist River |
| I use to be in Micurin in 1990. It was the best holiday I have ever had in my life .I 'm interested to see some more photos from nowadays "Micurin"(they call it Tsarevo). Another reason is a lady I met there... |

Tsarevo is a quite relaxing resort situated some 70km south of Bourgas. The little town/resort is relaxing. The beaches are jolly good but the unpleasant thing about Tsarevo is the weak entertainment nightlife.
Compared to the richer northern resorts Tsarevo needs a little more improvment and it might be good some day! :) Happy summer holidays everybody! Cheers! xoxox |

Hi
I have visited Tsarevo and Ahtopol many times over the years for family holidays, and find this area of Bulgaria to be most welcoming and friendly. The local people are truly genuine and helpful. This area is very beautiful and unspoilt with a depth of history that would occupy the most inquitive mind. I have many wonderful memories of holidays with my children in this area and now my children are no longer children and have left to start there own familys, i have the desire to return to Tsarevo or Ahtopol. However, this time i would like to move to this area permanently ( leave England), so i am hoping someone in one of these area can help me. I would like to buy a small house or apartment in one of these areas, it would only have to be small 2 bedroom perhaps an old rural house in need of some improvement, but not to far from the coast, or a house in either Tsarevo or Ahtopol.
